The Cascade Times is debuting a new fiction section this week that profiles author Brent Bakeman. Bakeman is a free-lance writer based in Seattle and he has written fiction for years. His stories and travel articles have appeared in a number of print and online publications. Shore birds

I do it because it clears my head, changes my mood. In hard times it’s the only thing. I like the sand, I like the beach, and I like the little shore birds that scurry around in front of me like their quail cousins do. I am that car that they are in front of on that country road. It is always beautiful. I’ve spent hours down there with the bluffs on one side and the surf on the other; sunny, warm and not a soul around except for me sweating and the birds conducting the business of survival; a place I’m just visiting. The bright lights and the big city embraced her like a warm drowning, and she crossed her arms and smiled both subjects completely complimentary; LA needs fresh innocence and she needed experience. The differences between

I always think about the differences between us. I always wonder what she was like then, when she was closer to my age. She says, usually with a smile, that she was just like she is now but not as smart. I think that others can be the only judges of how we were. But I’m sure she was a nice person. Read more
