Consumer sentiment from the bottom up

(Lowest level since 1980)

May 22, 2008

Consumer sentiment in May fell from the prior month, reaching its lowest level since 1980, according to several media reports. Consumer feelings clearly are at a low point and we have included comments made on the "Marketwatch" customer site to outline the views of investors and generic market watchers alike. The comments remain anonymous.

"Consumer Sentiment shows us that we haven't seen the worst yet. A correction of at least 20% from Jan 1 would have been adequate to reflect the severity of the problems."

Ragnarokk

"I love this 'market is always looking ahead' comment. We hear it all the time. Question: Then what was the market 'looking at' on Oct. 1st 2007? That was just a few days before the high."

FidelSarcastro

"Prediction: Prozac sales up 25% by year's end."

EconoMutt

"This calls for a major rate increase! How can consumer sentiment be down if Henry Paulson said 'The worst is behind us'? These guys get paid millions of dollars because they have a finger on the pulse of the economy."
