Self sounds like he is expecting a raise

April 18, 2008

After winning the national title in division one college basketball Monday night Kansas coach Bill Self slept an hour and then addressed the media. He sounded like a man interested in reworking his contract.

Self was born in Oklahoma, played at Oklahoma State, and was an assistant coach at OSU. In Stillwater they have received promises of $165 million dollars toward the athletic department from one T. Boone Pickens, who apparently has a lot of money.

"What I"d like to have is like everybody"d like to have," Self said. "I'd like to have some security. I don"t know what even Kansas would remotely be talking [about]. We haven"t even talked about that. When I say security, I mean years, so hopefully that"ll happen." Self added, "I"m not looking for more than what Kansas provides on a daily basis."

KU delivered a five-year contract extension last season to Self, increasing his annual compensation to more than $1.3 million with a chance to make another $350,000 each year if he meets incentives.

Self also said he had not heard from the Cowboys but that he would talk to them if they call. "I would answer the phone," Self said. In one final moment of ambiguity Self said he is "positively not interested" in the Oklahoma State job but added that he wants to sit down with Kansas administrators.

"I"m sure we'll meet and iron some things out," he said.
